I am a little torn.
I can’t decide between 2 things.
or
I have mixed feelings.

In [a] study people were paid to participate in an unrelated psychological quiz

They were given the opportunity to donate up to $5.00 of their earnings to Save The Children.

a) picture of Rokia
b) no picture: They could donate money to help 100s of 1,000s of starving African children.
c) Help Rokia AND they learned about other starving children.

We just don't seem to have the emotional bandwidth to care for too long or for too many people.

poverty=貧困

Children starve to death every year in Ecuador.

We tend to disregard major tragedies that are far away.

The number of people who die a disaster = the death toll

rubble = 瓦礫

the epicenter = ground center

patient zero

I tend to think it's all connected.

Do you think I'm being paranoid?

The USA has dispatched a team of disaster experts to Ecuador.

a landslide / a mudslide

Many bodies were crushed in the wreckage.

The sweet stench of death told the rescuers that there was very little hope left.

a gaffe = 失敗、しくじり、へま、失言

Japanese officials were incompetent.

incompetent = sb who cannot do their job right = 無能者、不適任者、無資格者
