How to improve your English?

1. Listening:
Use Dvds or videos from Nico Nico or Youtube.
You can download youtube videos at
http://keepvid.com
Pick something standard.
Don't pick gangster movies.
Don't pick mafia movies.
Don't pick movies with strange accents.

Today I'll teach you some basic listening math:
t + d = d
What did you say? --> Whadid you say?

d + y = j
What did you say? --> What dijou say?
What dija say?

you --> ya / ja / ju
What did ya say?
What did ju say?
What diju say?
What dija say?
Whadija say?
Whaja say?

TEST: jeat? -->dijeat?-->Did you eat?
Jeatye'?

2. When you study take lots of short breaks.
The mind can only remember 5-7 things at a time, on average (平均的にね！).

3. Try to associate new things with old things.
Today I'll teach you how to say 検死 or 解剖 in English.
There was a dead body found in the river!
かわいそうに! = That's sad!
It was a girl. She was only wearing a blue top. On the top was a big "C". Maybe she went to Chikusa High School. 千種高校
How do you say blue in Japanese? "青" au
What was she wearing? "top"
What letter was on her top? "C"
Put all the answers together? "青-top-C"
Say it in a loud voice! AUTOPSY! You did it!
How did she die?
We have to conduct an "autopsy."

4. Learn things in sets.
For example, don't learn "autopsy" alone.
Learn these sets!
"do an autopsy"
"conduct an autopsy"
"perform an autopsy"
It was a suicide.
He committed suicide.

5. To speak fluently you need to master prepositions!
He went ~ a trip.
I talked to her ~ the phone.
I talked ~ her. (about, to, with)
He was sitting ~ the chair.
I saw it ~ TV.
I was ~ bed all day.

6. WRITE IT! SAY IT! REVIEW IT!
Taking notes is important! Write down what you learn. Write it over and over! Even if you don't have natural talent, -- just like a musical instrument -- if you practice enough you can do it!

7. Last & most important:

WHAT NOT TO DO!
1. Don't use too much slang in your conversation. You'll sound strange. Use slang that you pick up from friends. That's probably safe.

2. Be careful when you study song lyrics! 変な歌詞を使っている歌が多い！危ないかも！ Many songs have lyrics that nobody uses or that are dirty or sexual! You might get in trouble! Be careful!

3. Don't study when you are tired. It's a waste of time.
