Nico Nico Douga Intermediate to Advanced Class- July 5, 2011

Today is the 5th! So let's learn some idioms using the number FIVE!
1. a five-finger discount=to steal
1. a five-finger discount=to shoplift

My mind was elsewhere.

A: Nice watch! How much was it?
B: Oh, it's really expensive, but luckily I got a five finger discount!

2. to take five=to take a break
OK, everyone let's take five!

---
I noticed today that many students refer to yesterday as INDEPENDENCE DAY, but did you know that we don't actually call it that? Do you know what we usually call it? The 4th of July!
What do we usually do on the 4th of July?
We have BBQs. We set off fireworks,
and we drink beer.
----
Did you watch the news this morning? What was the big news?
Yes, it was about Ryu Matsumoto.
Matsumoto stepped down. = Matsumoto resigned.

He was so arrogant!
You could say "impudent" but that word is a little old fashioned.
You could also say "insolent" but that word is a little old fashioned and formal

When someone thinks they are better than others and look down on others we call them, "stuck up."

I think I'm better than you.

He is so pretentious!
The Japanese dictionary says: うぬぼれた

You could also say he is "conceited".

He thinks the world revolves around him.

If someone has prejudices against a certain
sex or race, we say they are: bigoted.
bigoted〔他人の意見に耳を傾けず〕凝り固まった意見[考え]を持つ、頑固一徹[一点ばり]の

What do we call this kind of person?
a bigot 【名】偏狭な人、頑固者、偏屈者、偏見を持つ人
He's a bigot.
------
So what did Matsumoto do? He resigned. He stepped down.
I have mixed feelings about this.
He put his foot in his mouth.
He said something socially stupid.

a conspiracy theory=陰謀セオリー
That Matsumoto sabotaged himself on purpose.

What a coincidence!=なんて偶然だ。
He is MEGA rich.=VERY VERY RICH!
